Window Size Measurements

Window size measurements are important steps before installing curtains to ensure that the right curtain fabric is purchased. Measurements for different types of windows have been collated below, with some advice to ensure accuracy.

Measurement of bay windows (as Figure 1)

1. Use a measuring tool (such as a tape measure) to measure the distance from the top of the bay window to the bay window sill. Place the end of the measuring tool at the top of the window and follow the wall vertically down to the sill, making sure that the tool is vertically pressed against the wall to ensure the accuracy of the measurement.

2. Record the distance measured, this value will be used as a reference size for the height of the curtain fabric. (as Figure 1 H1)

Figure 1

Measurement of standard windows (as Figure 2):

(a) Use a measuring tool (e.g. tape measure) to measure the distance from the ceiling of the room to the bottom of the window. Place the end of the measuring tool on the ceiling and follow the wall vertically down to the bottom of the window, making sure the tool is vertically pressed against the wall to ensure accuracy.

Record the distance measured, this value will be used as a reference size for the height of the curtain fabric. (as Figure 2 H1)

Alternatively, there are other options for the height of the curtain fabric for a standard window, such as curtain fabric flush with the window, window height +20cm, and curtain fabric to the floor.

(b) Measure the distance from the ceiling of the room to the bottom of the window using the same measuring tool. Record the distance +20cm obtained from the measurement, this value will be used as the height reference dimension for the curtain fabric. (as Figure 2 H2)

(c) Measure the distance from the ceiling of the room to the floor. Using a measuring tool (e.g. tape measure), place one end of the tape measure on the ceiling and measure downwards in a vertical direction until you reach the floor. Ensure that the measuring tool is held vertically against the wall to improve accuracy. Record the distance measured, this value will be used as the height reference dimension for the curtain fabric. (as Figure 2 H3)

Figure 2

Measurement of floor-to-ceiling windows (as Figure 3)

Use a measuring tool (e.g. tape measure) to measure the distance from the ceiling to the floor. Place one end of the measuring tool on the ceiling and follow the wall vertically down to the floor position, making sure the tool is vertically pressed against the wall to ensure accuracy of the measurement.

Record the distance measured, this value will be used as a reference dimension for the height of the curtain. (as Figure 3 H1)

To summarize:

-For bay windows: measure the distance from the top of the window to the countertop as the height reference size for the curtain fabric.

-For standard windows: measure the distance from the ceiling to the bottom of the window, you can choose curtain fabric flush with the window, window height +20cm or curtain fabric to the floor as the height reference size of curtain fabric.

-For floor-to-ceiling windows: measure the distance from the ceiling to the floor as the height reference size of the curtain.

In addition, there are some precautions to keep in mind during the window size measurement process:

1. Use the right measuring tool: Choose an accurate measuring tool such as a tape measure or measuring tape when measuring. Ensure that you use a tool that can accurately measure the length and keep it straight when measuring.

2. Accurate measurement: Make sure the measuring tool is vertically tight to the wall or window frame to avoid errors.

3. Multiple measurements: In practice, it is advisable to take multiple measurements to ensure accuracy and add units (e.g. centimeters) when recording data to avoid confusion.

4. Record data: When taking measurements, always record the results of each measurement. This avoids confusion and forgetfulness, and helps to compare and verify the measurements.

In conclusion, it is vital to ensure accuracy when measuring window dimensions. By carefully following the correct measurements and keeping the above considerations in mind, you can ensure that the curtain fabric you choose and install is a perfect match for your window size, adding beauty and comfort to your home.
